  • Beyond the Mouse: When Touching is Communicating
  • 2009-10-14 -

There are no differences between an IT neophyte and a digital native.
This affirmation may seem a bit rash, and yet it isn't if technology steps in to help both.
Going beyond mouse logic is the premise that brings them together. Multitouch is the solution.

Digital natives are born with mobile phones in one hand and a PC in the other; they grew up with SMS, instant messaging, and social networks, developing a need for immediacy and simplicity.
Their fingers move like lightning over the keys of their mobile phones. Mobile phones have become smartphones and smartphones have become touch. This is how digital natives discovered that information, files and images can be touched first hand. And not only touched, but zoomed in and out, rotated, and modified. With extreme speed and simplicity.

For the neophyte, the passage was more difficult. The only technological instrument available until today was the TV: a screen brimming with images and lacking interactivity, conceived for unidirectional communication.
They are familiar with the screen. But when it involves clicking with a right and left button, opening and closing, reducing to an icon or expanding, everything becomes complicated, interaction is blocked and they are back to square one.

The Acer Group has also overcome the mouse barrier by offering a concrete solution that meets the need of simplicity, whether native or neophyte, thanks to the multi-touch technology integrated in the All-in-One desktop, combining it with an interface that is so realistic it establishes a direct relationship between the user and PC functions.

This is the birth of a computer that allows you to listen to a CD by just dragging the icon of the disc into the reader, or read a cookbook by leafing through the screen, or contact your friend by tapping on his image.
Multitouch technology combines the immediacy of the touch smartphone with the simplicity of your relationship with everyday objects.

Even before it became a fun and fascinating way to manage and share digital contents, multitouch technology made it possible to use more than one combination of gestures for a wider range of functions.
With a mere touch it is possible to move, rotate, magnify, or even select and surf through documents and menu options and start up applications: your relationship with your PC just got faster, more natural, and more intuitive.

This extraordinary new relationship is made possible by the Acer TouchPortal interface; this allows users to access Acer TouchGadgets, an assortment of fantastic and useful multitouch applications:

    • TouchMedia Share lets you manage pics from social networks, like Flickr™ and Facebook™, modify them, enlarge them, reduce them, and send them via e-mail.
    • TouchMemo brings its own form of post-it into the digital world. Now you can take notes with your finger and set an alarm to signal deadlines and appointments.
    • TouchPhotoShow allows you to easily organise your photos into photo albums and slide shows.
    • TouchFriends keeps you in touch with your friends online. It automatically integrates your lists of friends from Flickr™ and Facebook™ and provides notices of photo updates, facilitating contacts among friends.
    • TouchMusic allows you to organise, manage, and enjoy your favourite songs.

All this new world of touch is embodied in an extremely small form with a smooth and polished design. It is the perfect complement for even the most sophisticated settings and can be used in any room of the house, from the living room to the study, from the kitchen to the kids' room.

In this way the digital native can experience study, work, and home entertainment with the same amusing and immediate interaction he uses to contact friends on his smartphone. And the neophyte can leaf through a new book of recipes. Digital harmony found.
